This qualification reflects the role of instructors who perform a range of activities and functions within the fitness industry. Depending on the specialisation chosen, this qualification provides a pathway to work as an instructor providing group or gym programs. They work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment such as fitness, leisure, aquatic and community centres where risks are managed through pre-existing risk assessment and hazard control processes.

Individuals who specialise in gym Instruction provide individually tailored client assessments, provide technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They also provide supervision of a facility, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various client inquiries.

The qualification outcome will depend on the elective grouping chosen in order to work as an instructor providing exercise instruction for groups or gym programs. They work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment such as fitness, leisure,aquatic and community centres where risks are managed through pre-existing risk assessment and hazard control processes.

Students need to be able to relate to clients of differing ages and backgrounds, have a keen interest to assist clients to research their exercise goals, have good problem solving skills, and requires a literacy and numeracy (LLN) level of at least 2 and be able to work at a level 3.

Students must participate in an ‘Adult Pre-Exercise Screening’ at the course orientation to demonstrate their fitness for the purpose of demonstrating skills required during the course and to ensure they are able to complete CPR on the floor as required by the unit HLTAID003. Assessment and training requires students to be physically capable of performing a range of fitness activities and to use a range of gym equipment. They must be able to swim and be confident in the water.

• Students need to provide appropriate exercise attire, gym shoes, hand towel, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and gym bag to successfully complete this course.
• Students will need access to the Internet and to a computer to complete assessment activities outside the classroom.

Work Placement Requirements:

30 hours work placement is recommended. The students will be put onto a shift roster over the teaching timetable to a total of 30 hours. Work placement will be recorded in a log book and must be completed prior to completing the course. Work placement covers working with clients from the general public and undertaking client screening, gym instruction and programming. Students also conduct gym maintenance and promotional activities.

Students are supervised completing work placement in the campus gymnasium and must participate in 30 hours of workplace experience as part of their training. The purpose of this is to give students the opportunity to practise skills and apply knowledge obtained through their training as well as provide exposure to a variety of clients and scenarios. Work experience will be recorded which will enable students to record their work experience hours and reflect on their practice and evaluate their own performance.
